Gutter Installation – How to Do It Yourself
Unless you’re aiming for seamless gutters, DIY gutter installation usually involves buying 10-foot sections and connecting them with connectors. You’ll also need a variety of fasteners, including 1/4-in. self-tapping hex head screws and 1/8-in. medium-length rivets.
Start by assessing the condition of your gutters and roofline. Look for spots of mildew, rot or other damage. In general, if you see gutters in good shape and your home is well-maintained, it’s unlikely that you’ll need to install new gutters.
The most critical aspect of gutter replacement is creating a fall, or slope, that directs water down and away from the house. A minimum of one inch of fall is recommended for every 20 feet of gutter run. To determine how much fall you need, mark the lowest end point of your gutter run on the fascia board with a chalk line and move down the length of the fascia to the next low point. Repeat the process, this time using a level to ensure that the line is straight.
The Role of Gutters in Protecting Your Home’s Foundation
Once you’ve determined the desired slope, locate a gutter hanger bracket on every other rafter tail. They’re typically spaced 16 inches on center and can be located by looking for telltale nail heads. Bore a 1/8-in. hole through the fascia and into the rafter tail at each marked location.
Screw the gutter hangers into place, using lag screws long enough to penetrate the rafters at least 2 inches. When you reach a corner, install splice fittings (if needed) and connect them to the preceding section of the gutter apron with rivets. Lastly, caulk all seams and joints with high-quality gutter lap sealer.
